Trump’s ‘lame duck’ presidency

(AN ADVANCED READING LESSON)

At the time of writing (mid-November 2020), Donald Trump is still president of the USA. However, he has lost the election to Joe Biden, and is … well … a little unhappy about it.

That said, he is technically still president for several months, until Biden is sworn in at his inauguration in 2021. We’re all waiting to see what he will get up to in that time. (If you’re reading this in the future, you already know what happened: NO SPOILERS.) That’s why there’s a lot of language for future speculation in this week’s text.

This lesson is based on this article by the ABC (Australia, not America): After losing the election, what can Donald Trump do now that he’s a ‘lame duck’ President of the US?

I hope you enjoy this lesson and stay calm! If you make it all the way to the end, you will also find a funny little section on duck idioms.

See you in the classroom!
