Serial: The Alibi

Serial: The Alibi

Serial: The Alibi

(AN ADVANCED LISTENING LESSON)

You might not remember, but around 2014-2015, there were two really big pop culture trends that took off.

The first was podcasts as a source of entertainment. Sure, podcasts had been around for a while, but around this time, more awesome podcasts started getting made, and people started binging them like they binge TV shows. Now, there are so many podcasts to choose from, but not so long ago, this was an emerging trend.

The second big trend that took off at around this time was the ‘True Crime’ genre. Again, now true crime documentaries and books are everywhere you look. But in terms of pop culture, this was around the time this genre really exploded.

One of the things that kicked off both these trends was a podcast called Serial. I cannot emphasise just how popular this podcast was. I mean, EVERYONE was listening to it. It was like Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. If you hadn’t listened to it, or didn’t know about it, well you really didn’t have much to talk about with people (ha ha!)

It actually changed podcasting forever!

The first season of Serial investigates a 1999 murder case and what may or may not be a wrongful conviction. I won’t tell you too much about it, because that’s what we’re listening to this week. If you love true crime, you’ll love this. If you don’t (as I don’t!), you might still love it (as I did!) because it’s incredibly well-made and respectfully done. There’s more emphasis on the people and the stories than on the horrible details.

You can listen to the podcast episode here: Serial, Season 1, Episode1: ‘The Alibi’

And, because it’s tricky, here’s the transcript if you need it. Here’s the people map I mention at the end of the worksheet, so you can keep track of the people mentioned.

This is a bit of a wildcard, but I hope you’ll enjoy it!

If nothing else, you’re a bit more pop-culture savvy (five years late, but still!)

Have a wonderful week and if you end up listening to the whole podcast, let me know.
