(AN ADVANCED LISTENING LESSON)
Last week, we read about racism in sport, and how it comes to the surface when teams lose. However, that’s not the only time it appears. Another time we often see racism in sport is, ironically, when people try to call out racism.
A very famous example of this in Australia is Adam Goodes, an Indigenous AFL player (and later Australian of the Year) who suffered terrible racial abuse after he pointed out someone who had called him a racial slur during a football match. It turned out that the person in question was a 13-year-old girl.Â
This event sparked several years of intense racial abuse from fans and the media, eventually pushing Goodes to leave the sport. Of course, Goodes also has a huge base of support from fans, teammates and the public, but this wasn’t enough to stop the abuse.
This week’s listening lesson is based on an interview with Goodes conducted several years after his departure from the sport.
The interview is from the British Channel 4 news, Adam Goodes: The man who divided Australia in an Aboriginal race row.
I hope you enjoy this lesson and fall a little bit in love with Adam Goodes, like I have 😉
Happy studying!
