(AN ADVANCED LISTENING LESSON)
Did you know that there are over 250 First Nations (Indigenous) Australian languages, and over 800 dialects? Each of these is strongly intertwined with place and culture. Think about your own country – there is probably a similar linguistic diversity.
It is no surprise that language does more than just allow communication. Language expresses who we are the culture we are part of (which makes language learning even more fascinating!), and as this week’s podcast shows, language also SHAPES who we are, to some extent.
This week’s text, an episode from ABC Radio National’s ‘All In The Mind’ podcast, explains how Australia’s indigenous languages shape speakers’ perception of the world around them, and how this differs from the way native English speakers perceive the world around them.Â
You can listen to the podcast here: Indigenous language and perception
I hope you enjoy this lesson, and that perhaps it gets you thinking about how your own worldview has been shaped by the language you speak.
Happy studying!
